Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it’s important.

Overnight, some 48-year-old guy-influencer that I’d never heard of until this morning has all the hivemind in an uproar because he was juggling six girlfriends.

In a moment of madness, I started reading about him. Then I repented. Go thou and do likewise.

Occasionally, I spend a morning listening to Supreme Court oral arguments because I’m interested in the case and uncertain of the outcome.

Not today. For better or worse, I really don’t think SCOTUS is going to second-guess FDA on Mifepristone, though I wouldn’t bet too much on it.

I had forgotten about the website McMansion Hell. Here’s one real gem from there: we’ve found it folks: mcmansion heaven | McMansion Hell

Thoroughly enjoyed Purdue vs. Utah State yesterday. 106-67, with a Purdue box score so well-balance it was a thing of beauty and a joy forever until the Sweet 16 this weekend.

Oof! Looks like I never even visited MB yesterday except to forward my Sunday “big blog.” Looks like you all survived.

Twelve Reasons to Support the American Solidarity Party

Twelve Reasons to Support the American Solidarity Party.” Dwight Longenecker lists some of his reasons for his intentions to vote for a third-party candidate this fall: “As we approach the presidential election, I can proudly say I am not supporting either of the main candidates, but that I am a member of the American Solidarity Party. Like Don Quixote, I shall don my saucepan helmet, ride out on Rocinante, and tilt at some windmills.”

I was worried that 3-seed Illinois was letting 14-seed Morehead State hang on too close, so I tuned in live and it spurred Illinois to a 9-0 run.

It’s a burden sometimes to have my attention matter so much.

My periodic review of good writing I’ve saved surfaced this gem from David Brooks, which I may have shared before: How to Stay Sane in Brutalizing Times (unlocked)

I once cheered abolition of two things that I now kinda miss::

  • Military draft. I suspect that the all-volunteer military is weaker than one that conscripts people with other options.
  • FCC’s “Fairness Doctrine.” Maybe the demolition of channel limitations by the internet made this inevitable.

I review this regularly and it seems worth sharing again: Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front

It should come as no surprise that I will not be endorsing Donald Trump this year.

Finished reading Jessica Hooten Wilson, Walker Percy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and the Search for Influence. 📚

Reading Francis Spufford, Cahokia Jazz. 📚

Hagia Sophia Classical Academy has been a major claimant on my time and resources over the last 8 years or so, in large part because my grandchildren were attending. I first learned of it from an Ancient Faith Radio interview, and now there’s an updated interview, should such things be of interest.

Improbably, I’m reading Jessica Hooten Wilson, Walker Percy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and the Search for Influence. 📚 I’ve met and chatted with Jessica IRL, and she writes quite well, so this seems like good preparation to re-read Walker Percy.

Coming back from an 8 point halftime deficit on the road at #12 Illinois, #2 Purdue wins by 6, securing the outright conference championship for the second year in a row. Great conference, great game, two very different halves. I’m a happy camper.

I think I may have achieved flashes of insight here. March 5, 2024 – Tipsy Teetotaler ن

[I]t was a perfectly defensible position to hold that Trump should be disqualified. What was indefensible was the air of swaggering certainty that permeated so many of those takes. … self-evident. Common sense. Obvious. Indisputable. Automatic.
